RTL & TV2 order ‘The Traitors’ as format expands to Germany, Denmark & Finland

The Traitors (UK)

RTL in Germany and TV2 in Denmark have commissioned local versions of psychological adventure format The Traitors, while a Finnish adaptation is also in the works.

In Finland, Fremantle will produce the Finnish version, though no broadcaster partner has yet been named, whilst in Denmark Blu will produce a Danish version for TV2. All3Media’s Berlin based Tower Productions will produce the series for RTL in Germany.

Based on the Dutch series De Verraders, which was developed and produced by All3Media’s IDTV, the format sees a group of contestants move into an atmospheric location with the goal to work as a team to complete a series of challenging missions to earn a cash prize. The catch, however, is that some of the contestants are traitors who will attempt to deceive and manipulate their way to the prize instead of sharing it amongst the group. As this game plays out, the participants must do everything they can to identify the traitors in their midst before it is too late.

These new versions of the format bring the total number of commissions to 14 and follow soon after NBCUniversal streamer Peacock’s order for a second season, less than a month after the show’s launch. The first season of the US version of the format was also picked up for broadcast in the UK by the BBC last month, just two weeks after the UK’s own version of show concluded.

Nick Smith, EVP of formats at All3Media International, said: “The Traitors is intelligent reality TV, providing a highly adaptable format of psychological game play that creates incredibly tense, must-watch moments for global audiences, making it as compelling as our most addictive dramas.”
