Disney closes Spanish pay-tv channels Fox Life & Viajar

Grey’s Anatomy

Disney has closed down its pay-tv channels Fox Life and Viajar in Spain as the company shift its focus to its direct-to-consumer model and streaming service Disney+.

The two linear channels had been available on services such as Movistar+ and Vodafone TV until recently, with Fox Life carrying US scripted series and features predominantly aimed at a female audience, while Viajar was focused on documentary content.

Drama series that had been shown on Fox Life are now available to view on different platforms, which shows such as Grey’s Anatomy moved to Disney+.

Viajar’s documentary content are meanwhile to be moved to National Geographic, which is owned by Disney following its 2019 acquisition of Fox.

These latest closures follow the Mouse House’s plans last year to close 100 international TV channels – including Fox Life in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong – by the end of 2021.

The company has already shuttered channels in countries including the UK, Australia and New Zealand, making no secret that is current priority is Disney+.
