Mexican animation studio Ánima has launched a new adult & young adult division, and set a 2D animated sitcom based on the popular El Santos comic strip as its first project.

The original El Santos comic was developed by Mexican illutrators José Trinidad Camacho (aka Trino) and José Ignacio Solórzano (aka Jis), with both serving as executive producers on the new series.

Set in the world of Mexican wrestling, the titular El Santos is a brash, uncouth, over-the-top luchador who’s in love with the exotic and sex addicted Tetona Mendoza. Constantly fighting against the forces of good vs evil, he will do anything for Tetona’s love.

Trino and Jis’ original comic strip has nine published books and is currently printed weekly in numerous newspapers around the world, with an animated feature film, El Santos vs la Tetona Mendoza, having previously been released in 2012.

Ánima was founded in 2002 by CEO Fernando De Fuentes Sainz and COO José C. García de Letona, and is headquartered in Mexico City, with studios in Madrid, Canary Islands, and Buenos Aires. The company is behind series such as El Chavo and Cleo & Cuquin, and co-produced Space Chickens in Space with Disney and Legend Quest and Legend Quest: Masters Of Myth with Netflix.

“We could not be prouder than to introduce our new strategic focus on adults and young adult starting with El Santos,” commented García de Letona. “Thanks to Trino and Jis and their adult-themed comic strip, El Santos has become part of the Latin and Hispanic pop culture and has amassed an extraordinary number of fans throughout the years. This new series is the perfect project in which to launch our new division.”
