Sky Deutschland scores first ‘Spitting Image’ format sale

Spitting Image

Sky in Germany is prepping a local version of Spitting Image, the satirical puppet show that returned to screens via BritBox last year.

The German version, like the UK series, is being produced by Avalon and Redseven Entertainment and will feature puppets representing prominent national figures. Avalon Distribution sells format and tape rights.

Those receiving the Spitting Image treatment include Liverpool FC’s manager Jürgen Klopp and German politician Angela Merkel, along with Austria’s chancellor Sebastian Kurz and domestic TV star Barbara Schöneberger.

The German show will be made up of both new scenes and existing footage that will be dubbed. Its commission comes as the UK version moves into a second season, following the order from UK-focused streamer BritBox.

Christian Asanger, VP of entertainment at Sky Deutschland, said: “With the world’s first local version of this successful British format, we are adding another innovative Sky original to our comedy portfolio.”

The UK version has already sold globally, including in Finland and Belgium. Clips are also available via YouTube in the US.
