Discovery+ orders GameStop doc & signs 250+-hour All3Media content deal

Race Against The World

Factual streamer Discovery+ has ordered a fast turnaround documentary about the recent Gamestop share price scandal, with Jordan Belfort, the inspiration for the Martin Scorsese film The Wolf Of Wall Street, attached to host.

The UK’s ITN Productions is producing the one-off programme, which has a working title of GameStop: The Wall Street Hijack and will premiere in the UK on 8 April before launching internationally.

Belfort, the former stockbroker who was convicted of stock market manipulation, will examine how a group of young day traders used social media to organise a huge stock purchase for US video game retailer GameStop.

Mark Radice will produce the doc, while Jeremy Phillips, Bruce Kennedy and Ian Russell will exec produce.

“I’ve found some very creative ways to make money on Wall Street, but I’ve got to say, personally, I love the fact that everyone now has the ability to organise and give the Wall Street players a run for their money, it’s a real David versus Goliath story,” commented Belfort.

Content boost

The order comes shortly after the streamer announced it had picked up more than 250 hours of non-scripted content in a deal with All3Media International.

The agreement includes both seasons (15 x 60-minutes in total) of UK-based Studio Lambert’s Race Across The World, which is immediately available for subscribers in North America, India Italy and Spain.

Discovery+ has also taken all four seasons (40 x 60-minutes) of dating show Naked Attraction, also from Studio Lambert, which will arrive in North America later this year, but is now available in Norway, Sweden, Finland, Italy, Poland and the Netherlands.

The streamer has also taken SVOD rights to 11 seasons (encompassing 45 episodes) of Betty’s The Undateables, which have been signed for North America, launching later in the year.

Further deals include more than 11 hour of content featuring celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, including The F Word (UK) and Kitchen Nightmares, as well as Story Films’ Generation Porn, Maverick Television’s The Elephant Hospital and North One’s Ski A&E among others.
