Discovery’s ID taps into Netflix’s ‘Tiger King’ with new show
US cablenet ID is moving into the big cat game with a new show delving further into the story first revealed by Netflix’s hit docuseries Tiger King.
Investigating The Strange World Of Joe Exotic revolves around tiger breeder Joseph ‘Joe Exotic’ Maldonado-Passage and his role in an alleged murder-for-hire plot to kill rival Carole Baskin, who ran animal sanctuary Big Cat Rescue. Maldonado-Passage has also accused Baskin in the disappearance of her former husband Don Lewis.
The new show will use exclusive footage that has never been aired to further explore the story, which ID describes as the “definitive sequel” to the Netflix hit. It is being produced by US-based Conveyor Media, with Theresa McKeown and Colin Whelan executive producing, and Rebecca Sirmons attached as co-executive producer.
ID said the programme would ask whether Baskin is “a selfless crusader and protector of animals, who found unimaginable strength despite the mysterious disappearance of her husband? Or are we witnessing Carole Baskin’s master plan finally take effect?”
“Viewers are understandably riveted by Netflix’s Tiger King, but the millions of true crime fans around the world were left wanting more,” said Henry Schleiff, group president of ID, Travel Channel, American Heroes Channel and Destination America.
“ID is the perfect place to find the inevitable sequel to this drama – featuring a missing husband, a hit man, and the illegal business of exotic animals. It’s time to let the cat out of the bag and address the lingering questions that viewers demand be answered.”
