Inside HBO Max’s complete originals slate

L-R: Greg Berlanti, Rick and Morty, Mindy Kaling, South Park

HBO Max may not be launching for another seven months, but the service is ramping up its marketing drive in earnest, revealing star-studded content offerings from high-profile talent such as Mindy Kaling and Greg Berlanti, as well as aggressive plays for catalogue fare such as South Park and Rick and Morty.

WarnerMedia revealed details for HBO Max during its investors day on Tuesday (29 October) at the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, California. The service, priced at $14.99 per month, is to launch with 10,000 hours of premium content, including all of HBO bundled in with HBO Max Originals that expand the slate to young adults, kids and family programming.

The business revealed that it has secured exclusive streaming rights in the US to Comedy Central’s South Park in a multi-year licensing pact with South Park Digital Studios, a joint venture between Viacom and South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone.

All 23 seasons of the show will become available on HBO Max from June 2020 followed by three new seasons, which will debut on HBO Max 24 hours after their premieres on Comedy Central.

Elsewhere, HBO Max has also nabbed streaming rights to Adult Swim’s Emmy-winning animated series Rick And Morty in the US.

Meanwhile, super-producer Greg Berlanti has two DC projects in the works for the platform, including Strange Adventures and a Green Lantern-inspired series.

Strange Adventures is a DC Super Hero anthology series exec produced by Berlanti and will feature characters from across the DC canon, exploring close-ended morality tales about the intersecting lives of mortals and superhumans. It is produced by Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. The 13 x 30-minute single-camera comedy follows three 18-year-old freshman roommates at Evermore College in Vermont. The straight-to-series order stems from Kaling’s exclusive overall deal with Warner Bros. Television Group, and is produced by Kaling International in association with Warner Bros. Television.
