Chinese VOD nets welcome Teletubbies
Chinese streaming services Youku and iQiyi have both acquired both seasons of the rebooted Teletubbies preschool series.
Deals with Canada-based DHX Media see Youku and Baidu offering season one from June 1 via their SVOD and AVOD services.
DHX has licensed more than 9,700 hours into China to date, and has also secured a Teletubbies consumer products deals.
“China is a major market for the new Teletubbies as we continue the global rollout of the brand,” said Josh Scherba, executive VP of distribution and content of DHX. “We are delighted that leading digital platforms continue to license more of our kids’ programming.”
DHX acquired the Teletubbies franchise from Ragdoll Productions in 2013, and went to sell a new version of the show to CBeebies, with UK-based prodco Darrall Macqueen Productions attached.
Earlier this month, the expansive DHX acquired the Strawberry Shortcake and Peanuts brands.
