Ex-CTV entertainment chief joins Sony

Former CTV programming chief Phil King has joined Sony Pictures Television as senior VP, distribution for Canada.

Phil KingKing (pictured) left his role as president of CTV sports and entertainment programming in August last year as part of a management restructure at Canadian conglomerate Bell Media.

He will now be responsible for managing SPT’s distribution business in Canada, based out of Toronto. One duty will see him work closely with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment on transactional VOD sales.

King will report to Alexander Marin, SPT’s executive VP, distribution, Latin America, the Caribbean and Canada, who said: “Phil’s expansive background in media has given him a deep understanding of programmers’ needs, particularly at this time of digital transformation, which makes him the perfect choice to lead our distribution business in Canada.”

Between 2010 and 2015, King led CTV’s acquisition and production strategies for broadcast networks CTV and CTV2, sports net TSN and RDS, specialty channels including Discovery Channel and Bravo, pay TV networks TMN and HBO Canada, and SVOD platform CraveTV.

Before CTV, he was president and general manager of specialty channel TSN, having joined in 1989 as an audit manager.

His production credits include The Amazing Race Canada, Saving Hope, Orphan Black and MasterChef Canada.
