Donald Trump, Univision settle $500m legal case
The US$500 million legal case between US Hispanic broadcaster Univision Communications and American presidential hopeful Donald Trump has been settled.
Details of the settlement were not forthcoming, but relate to events set in motion when Trump called illegal Mexican immigrants “rapists”.
Univision had dropped the Miss Universe telecast in protest of the comments that Trump, then Miss Universe Organization co-owner, made at his formal presidential candidacy announcement.
This came soon after Univision had agreed a deal with the Trump Organization and other Miss Universe owner, NBCUniversal, to broadcast the pageant for five years.
English-language broadcaster NBC then also pulled the event off air, with independent cable net ReelzChannel ultimately taking on the rights.
Trump then acquired NBCU’s share in Miss Universe Organization, settled law suits with the Comcast-owned broadcaster, and then sold the shares to WME.
At the same time he filed a US$500 million suit against Univision. A pair of short but jointly-released statements yesterday confirmed the suit was now settled.
“I have known Univision’s president and CEO, Randy Falco, for more than 20 years, and I’m glad we are able to put these differences behind us,” said Trump said.
“I have known Donald Trump for many years in both a personal and professional capacity, and we are pleased to settle this matter and move forward,” said Falco.
