A&E’s Returned departs as Bates Motel stays open
US cable channel A&E has cancelled its remake of French supernatural drama The Returned after one season, but commissioned a further two runs of Bates Motel.
The Returned was placed as a companion to popular Psycho spin-off Bates Motel, but failed to gain traction. The ten-episode series came from A&E’s production arm, A+E Studios, FremantleMedia North America and original series creator Haut et Court.
FremantleMedia International sells the US finished version, which is based on the Canal+ drama Les Revenants (pictured) – itself based on the 2004 film They Came Back.
The cancellation represents the second time an international scripted format has failed to work alongside Bates Motel, which comes from Universal Television. Those Who Kill, based on a Scandinavian series of the same name, was cancelled in May last year.
Bates Motel, meanwhile, has been handed seasons four and five, comprising a total of 20 episodes.
