Discovery makes Euro OTT play

Discovery Communications is launching its Dplay OTT service in three new markets in Europe.

JB PerretteThe streaming service is already in Norway and will now roll out in Denmark, Italy and Sweden.

The new launches for DPlay will take place before the end of the year. The service is programmed with Discovery fare and launches over the top and via dedicated apps for connected mobile devices.

Programming on the service will include Discovery staple such as Deadliest Catch.

Dplay has already launched in beta mode in the three new markets.

“Dplay is Discovery’s second OTT product and we are laser-focused on delivering direct to consumer, multiplatform experiences that offer must see content at a fixed price,” said Dave Schafer, senior VP, digital, DNI.

“Building on our leadership in pay TV chanels,which are still growing at a strong pace, we are also aggressively launching digital direct-to-conumser products in key markets, with a goal of reaching one million subscribers by 2017,” added JB Perrette, president of DNI (pictured).

Discovery-owned Eurosport already runs a dedicated streaming service, Eurosport Player, in 52 international markets.
