Canal+ acquires buzzy German drama
Cold War-inspired German drama Deutschland 83 will broadcast in France.
The show’s distributor, FremantleMedia International, has sold the eight-part miniseries to pay TV giant Canal+.
FMI said this meant Deutschland 83 has now presold into six “significant” European territories, as well being the first German-language drama to air on a key US network following a previous agreement with SundanceTV.
UFA Fiction produced the show for RTL in German, focusing on a 24-year-old East German native tasked with spying on the West during the 1980s.
Jamie Lynn, executive VP sales and distribution, EMEA, FMI, said: “Since its World Premiere at the Berlinale festival earlier this year, Deutschland 83 has continued to attract both critical praise and the attention of buyers from all over the world. Sitting on the world class Canal+ platform, alongside some of the world’s best scripted content, Deutschland 83 is proving to be one of 2015’s must have dramas.”
