BBC decommissions detective drama

UK pubcaster the BBC is ending its detective drama New Tricks after its twelfth run.

The show, which comes from Warner Bros. Television Production UK-owned Headstrong Pictures and follows a retired cop unit investigating cold cases, launched in 2003 as a 90-minute special before going to become a stalwart scripted series for BBC One.

Yesterday, the BBC ordered a final season, which goes out in the summer.

“We are incredibly proud of New Tricks and would like to thank Roy Mitchell, the brilliant creator, [previous producer] Wall to Wall and Headstrong, and all the cast and teams involved across the 12 series,” said BBC One controller Charlotte Moore and the BBC’s head of drama, Ben Stephenson, in a statement.

“However, on BBC One it’s important to make room for new series and continue to increase the range of drama on the channel, so it won’t be returning after the next series airs this summer.”
