Canadian Netflix rivals snags exclusive Disney deal
Recently-launched Canadian SVOD service Shomi has struck a programming deal with Disney.
The deal, with The Walt Disney Studios and The Disney/ABC Television Group, gives the SVOD a range of TV series and features from the Hollywood studio.
TV series in the deal include ABC network series Scandal and Revenge and ABC Family show Twisted. Other titles from the ABC Family cable net include Felicity, Reaper, and The Secret Life of the American Teenager.
Disney kids series include Marvel Animation series The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes (pictured), Iron Man: Armored Adventures and The Super Hero Squad Show.
Classic kids and family movie titles include Race to Witch Mountain, Muppets Treasure Island and Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Features for adults include Gone in Sixty Seconds, Pearl Harbor and The Prestige.
Shomi has netted exclusive SVOD rights to the TV series and movies.
“With this new Disney content, we are going back to the days when families watched entertainment together,” said Marni Shulman, Shomi’s head of content and programming.
The Disney deal follows a similar exclusive agreement with CBS. It also has programming deals with Sony and BBC Worldwide.
The SVOD service is owned by Canadian cable giants Rogers Communications and Shaw Communication and launched in beta form earlier this month.
