Fox hands emerging writer duo development deal

Empire-R9-01_kva1US broadcast network has given emerging writers Ed Gonzalez and Jeremy Haft scripted development deals after the duo were chosen as fellows of an in-house writing initiative.

Gonzalez and Haft have been staffed on Empire (pictured), Fox’s upcoming family drama from Lee Daniels about a hip-hop mogul who has to decide which of his children would assume his corporation.

The pair was chosen as fellows of the Fox Writers Intensive programme, which aims to identify a diverse slate of new writers it can staff on its latest scripted efforts. As a result, they get a development deal with Fox Broadcasting and 20th Century Fox Television, and a US$15,000 grant.

The Fox Writers Intensive launched in 2011. “Three years in, the Fox Writers Intensive continues to excel in finding fresh creative voices for our TV, film, literary and digital productions,” said Joe Earley, COO, Fox.

Five other Fox Writers Intensive finalists have been staffed on Fox-produced scripted series for the 2014-15 season, including ABC’s Once Upon a Time and USA Network’s Royal Pains.
