Danish format set for Canada’s CBC
Canadian national broadcaster CBC has commissioned a local version of Danish entertainment format Comedy on the Edge.
Danish broadcaster DR created the format and it will now run in English-speaking Canada on CBC following a deal with distributor Banijay International.
The local version will be 13x30mins. Producer Frantic Films is attached to create the show ahead of an early 2015 launch.
“Our friends at DR have created a format which perfectly blends comedy with factual entertainment,” said Sebastian Burkhardt, head of sales at Banijay International. “More than anything this format is about bringing people together and connecting viewers with even the most remote places in the country using shared humour.”
Comedy on the Edge sees a comedian host go to a small, marginalised towns to discover the quirks of the locals, despite national media coverage seemingly damning them. At the end of a stay in the town, the comedian delivers a stand-up routine based on what they have seen.
