Lucasfilm kills Clone Wars, taking Star Wars in new direction

Lucasfilm, the studio behind the Star Wars franchise and which was bought by Disney for US$4 billion last year, has cancelled its Star Wars: The Clone Wars series and postponed the Star Wars Detours project.

The studio said that it is looking at a whole new Star Wars series set in an entirely new time period and that it was winding down the animated Clone Wars series.

“As we enter into an exciting new era focused on the next Star Wars trilogy, Lucasfilm has decided to pursue a new direction in animated programming,” Lucasfilm said. “We are exploring a whole new Star Wars series set in a time period previously untouched in Star Wars films or television programming.”

Clone Wars stretched to five seasons on Turner’s Cartoon Network channel. No episodes are currently in production and no more will be made for TV. However, Lucasfilm said that story arcs from the show will continue and it will let fans know soon where they can find this bonus content.

Star Wars Detours was an animated comedy series from Seth Green and has been shelved, albeit temporarily, according to Lucasfilm because of the subsequent plan to make a new Star Wars film trilogy.

Lucasfilm said: “Detours was conceived and produced before we decided to move forward with the new Star Wars trilogy, and in the wake of that decision, Lucasfilm has reconsidered whether launching an animated comedy prior to the launch of Episode VII makes sense.”
