Got Talent named the top global format of 2011
Got Talent has been named the best-performing format in the world last year, beating previous winner Idols into second.
Eurodata TV Worldwide measures the number of times that formats appear in the year-end top-ten rankings of broadcasters around the world and, based on 2011 data, Got Talent was the clear winner having been a top-ten show in territories including Australia, Turkey, the UK and others.
FremantleMedia had first and second in the rankings with Got Talent and Idols, ahead of BBC Worldwide’s Strictly Come Dancing, which in third slipped from second in the 2010 ranking.
The X Factor was fourth, rounding off another year in which music and talent formats performed very strongly.
“Musical, talent and feelgood formats are what worked last year and they provided an alternative to a lot of the serious and worrying news being reported on television,” Amandine Cassi, head of research at Médiamétrie – Eurodata TV Worldwide said.
A notable new entry in the rankings was The Voice, which was placed seventh, behind Big Brother and MasterChef. Its appearance was notable because it only launched in 2010.
“Alongside Got Talent, it is one of the fastest successes that we have seen,” Cassi said.
The data on the best performing formats is contained in Eurodata’s One Television Year in the World report. A full analysis of the Eurodata research is in the MIPTV edition of TBI Formats.
