#5: Elementary (CBS)
The US networks are deep into development season and have spent the past few weeks frantically ordering pilots ahead of this year’s Upfronts and LA Screenings. TBI takes a look at some of the most interesting projects that are up for consideration.
#5: Elementary (CBS)
The Sherlock Holmes renaissance is complete; following the success of the Robert Downey Jr-fronted, Guy Ritchie-directed Hollywood feature films and an extremely successful British adaptation starring Benedict Cumberbatch, which has been renewed for a third season, CBS is putting together a Stateside small screen series.
Elementary will follow a young Holmes in New York city. The modern day adaptation of the Arthur Conan Doyle-created detective series will be produced by Timberman/Beverly Productions, which produces CBS supernatural medical drama A Gifted Man, and CBS Television Studios. Medium writer and producer Rob Doherty wrote the script and the pilot is being directed by Homeland’s Michael Cuesta.
However, one problem that may prevent a successful pick-up is a potential legal battle with the producers of the BBC series. Sue Vertue, executive producer of Sherlock and director at Hartswood Films told The Independent: “We understand that CBS are doing their own version of an updated Sherlock Holmes. It’s interesting, as they approached us a while back about remaking our show. At the time, they made great assurances about their integrity, so we have to assume that their modernised Sherlock Holmes doesn’t resemble ours in any way, as that would be extremely worrying. We are very proud of our show and like any proud parent, will protect the interest and wellbeing of our offspring.”
Chances: High; if CBS can avoid any legal problems.
