Sony inks World Cup doc deals

Sony Pictures Television has sold soccer documentary How To Win The FIFA World Cup to a host of international broadcasters including South Africa’s SABC and UK commercial net ITV.

This comes as the tournament launches this week, marking one of the largest events in the broadcasting calendar.

The documentary has been sold to ITV4 (UK), SABC1 (South Africa), RTP (Portugal), RTL7 (Holland), Russia 2, ICTV (Ukraine), NTV Spor (Turkey), Rede TV (Brazil), ERTU (Egypt), Azteca TV (Mexico), Telefe (Argentina), Astro Prima (Malaysia), HTV3 (Vietnam) and TVN (Korea).

The doc, which is sponsored by oil company Castrol, looks at what it takes to win the competition, examining all 32 teams taking part, as well as quirky facts such as how the colour of a goalkeeper’s jersey can influence penalties.

Sony Pictures Television has also sold the format of the documentary to broadcasters in a number of countries including Canada, Honduras, Costa Rica, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Turkey and Russia.
