Netflix, Julie Andrews create Henson puppet show
Legendary actor Julie Andrews has created a preschool puppet show for SVOD service Netflix.
Andrews will star in Julie’s Greenroom, which is set to launch globally in 2017 and will guest star the likes of Alec Baldwin, Carol Burnett and Sara Bareilles.
Sesame Street studio The Jim Henson Company is creating a new series of puppet kids, who learn about the performing arts in each episode.
Andrews created the 13x30mins show with her daughter, Emma Walton Harrison, and Judy Rothman-Rofe. She will executive produce and play Ms. Julie, the director of the Wellspring Center for Performing Arts.
The kids – known as the Greenies – will experience mime, music, dance, improve, circus arts, voice and more. Most episodes include an original song and a guest star.
“This project represents the fulfilment of a long held dream to educate children about the wonder of the arts,” said Andrews.
Netflix’s director of global kids content, Andy Yeatman, said it was “an incredible treat” to work with Andrews.
The show began shooting in May in Long Island, New York, with Andrews executive producing alongside Walton Hamilton, Steve Sauer, Lisa Henson and Halle Stanford.
Julie’s Greenroom represents one of the most ambitious plays Netflix has made since entering the original kids TV space.
