Croatia’s HRT to remake Norwegian youth drama ‘Skam’

HRT in Croatia has ordered a local version of NRK’s groundbreaking youth-skewing format Skam.

The show, which debuted in 2015 on NRK and became a viral sensation, will be known as Sram in Croatia and is to be produced by CGM Films following a deal with format distributor Beta Film.

Skam tracks the lives of a group of teenagers, with each season focusing on a different main character while the series runs daily online and weekly as a webcast.

The Croatian version will be directed by Jelena Gavrilović and written by Hana Jušić and Nikica Zdunić, with the series to be set in Zagreb. It has been slated to debut on HRT1 in the fall of 2024.

The series has already been adapted in France, Germany, the US, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium and Italy.

Rahela Štefanović, editor in chief at HRT, said: “Sram is something that we, as a public broadcaster, needed more than anything in this period of transformation and redefinition of our role in era of media abundance.

“The format is teaching us to respect and cherish our audience, to make them feel important and loved.”

Beta Film’s Kids & Family label handles international sales and format rights.

Skam was created by Julie Andem, who subsequently struck an overall deal with HBO, while the format was remade around the world, including by Facebook in the US.
