Greg Daniels opening development room to explore ‘The Office’ spin-off
Greg Daniels, the US writer and producer who adapted UK comedy The Office into a hit NBC mockumentary sitcom, is opening a development room this week to explore the potential for a spin-off show.
Daniels helmed the comedy series, which ran for nine seasons between 2005 and 2013 and is now considered one of the most successful sitcoms of all time.
It was based on Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s 2001-2003 British show of the same name, which has also been remade in countries including Canada, India, France and Germany, with an Australia version coming to Amazon streamer Prime Video later this year.
According to Deadline, which first reported that Daniel was opening a writers’ room, the new series would not be a reboot, but rather a new show set in the same world as the US version and featuring new characters.
Produced by Universal Television, the US version of The Office starred Steve Carell, Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski and Jenna Fischer and followed the working lives of employees of the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
