Netflix developing ‘Wednesday’ spin-off as streamer eyes franchise expansion
Netflix is reportedly in development on a spin-off from its supernatural comedy horror series Wednesday, based around Fred Armisen’s character of Uncle Fester.
The streamer is said to be holding discussions ahead of the second season of Wednesday going into production in April 2024.
The show, starring Jenna Ortega, is based on Charles Addams’ iconic The Addams Family, and was one of the streamer’s most-watched titles in the first half of the year, according to last week’s inaugural What We Watched engagement report.
Armisen portrayed Fester in the first season of Wednesday and Netflix is hoping that a spin-off around his character could help to establish a wider The Addams Family universe for the streamer, according to Bloomberg, which first reported the development.
Wednesday stars Ortega as the eldest Addams child, following her as she attends Nevermore Academy and works to hone her psychic powers, while tackling a killing spree and solving a decades-old murder.
