Netflix is expanding its original anime offering with adaptations of two manga originally created by Eiichiro Oda, including The One Piece, another adaptation of One Piece, which the service has already brought to the screen in live action.

The streamer launched the live action adaptation of One Piece in August, with a second season commissioned soon afterwards and currently in development from Tomorrow Studio.

The story follows Monkey D Luffy and his crew in his search for the fabled ‘one piece’, a great treasure that will allow him to become the next pirate king. The new anime will begin by tackling the East Blue saga from the original manga.

WIT Studio, which has worked on shows including Spy x Family and Attack On Titan will produce this new anime version for Netflix, which will be separate to the long-running existing One Piece anime from Toei Animation for Fuji TV, which launched in 1999 and has so far aired more than 1,000 episodes.

Netflix has also commissioned an anime adaptation of another manga by Oda – Monsters 103 Mercies Dragon Damnation, which follows Ryuma, a samurai entangled in a world disrupted by an ominous force – a dragon capable of unleashing catastrophic destruction upon the land.

E&H Production produces the series, which will launch on the streamer in January 2024.
