Amazon streamer Prime Video has renewed comedic fantasy-drama series Good Omens for a third and final season and is also expanding Japanese feature drama The Silent Service into a series.

The concluding season of Good Omens will be based on discussions between Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, authors of the 1990 novel that the series is based upon, about “what happens next” that took place almost 35 years ago.

The new season is produced by Amazon MGM Studios, BBC Studios Productions, the Blank Corporation, and Narrativia. It will begin filming in Scotland soon, said Amazon.

Gaiman, who has a first-look deal with Amazon MGM Studios, continues as executive producer, writer, and showrunner. Rob Wilkins of Narrativia, representing Terry Pratchett’s estate, as well as BBC Studios Productions’ head of comedy, Josh Cole, will also executive produce.

Good Omens follows the story of the angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and the demon Crowley (David Tennant) and their unlikely friendship, through their mutual love of life on Earth.

“I’m so happy finally to be able to finish the story Terry and I plotted in 1989 and in 2006. Terry was determined that if we made Good Omens for television, we could take the story all the way to the end,” said Gaiman.

“Season one was all about averting Armageddon, dangerous prophecies, and the end of the world. Season two was sweet and gentle, although it may have ended less joyfully than a certain angel and demon might have hoped.

“Now in Season Three, we will deal once more with the end of the world. The plans for Armageddon are going wrong. Only Crowley and Aziraphale working together can hope to put it right. And they aren’t talking.”

‘The Silent Service’ gets series extension

In related news, Amazon is turning its Japanese feature film The Silent Service into a series that will launch on Prime Video next year.

Amazon announced that it was in production on the film, based on the popular Japanese manga, at the start of the year, marking its first original movie in Japan.

The streamer has now expanded the film into a series by adding more than three hours of additional footage, with The Silent Service Season One – The Battle Of Tokyo Bay to debut on the service worldwide in February 2024.

The original manga was written and illustrated by artist Kaiji Kawaguchi, and published in Kodansha’s Weekly Morningmanga magazine from 1988 to 1996.

Amazon MGM Studios partnered with Credeus on the project, with the theatrical version launching on 29 September, distributed by Toho in Japan.

The Silent Service tells the story of Kaieda Shiro, captain of Japan’s first nuclear submarine, and his attempts to have the vessel recognised as an independent nation.

The series will include the story of the film version, as well as scenes not shown in theaters, and footage that continues the story beyond the theatrical release.

“We saw so much potential from The Silent Service, and took on a challenge to produce the theatrical film in Japan for the first time,” said James Farrell, VP of local originals, Amazon MGM Studios.

“With huge support from Toho, we brought the submarine action to the big screen this fall. Now, we are pleased to present as a drama series with more than three hours of additional content which expands the universe we saw on screen, and also continues on well past the ending to an amazing new conclusion.”
