Canal+ Poland has become the latest buyer to board upcoming RTVE and Prime Video drama Scar (aka Cicatriz), which is believed to be the first scripted collaboration between Spanish and Serbian companies.

The 8 x 50-minute thriller is based on the novel of the same name by Juan Gómez-Jurado and has been written by Money Heist, Vis A Vis and Toy Boy scribes including Fernando Sancristóbal, Pablo Roa, Verónica Marza, Laura Belloso, Fran Carballal, Ramón Tarrés and Pablo Manchado.

Spanish pubcaster RTVE and Prime Video Spain are both attached along with Telekom Srbija and now Canal+ Poland, while Spain’s Plano a Plano is coproducing with Dopamine, Asacha Media Group and Adriatic firm Adrenalin.

The show’s cast is headed by Serbia’s Milena Radulovic (Besa) and Spain’s Juanlu González (Valeria), with Maciej Stuhr (The Secret of the Village). Filming began in November in Bilbao, with part of the shoot also taking part on location in Serbia.

The story tracks a young, lonely soon-to-be-billionaire named Simon who is considering selling his valuable algorithm to a huge corporation led by the ruthless Jakub Sanders.

After meeting a Ukrainian woman online, she travels to Spain to meet Simon, sparking a love story that began as a web of lies but which ultimately changes the destiny of its two protagonists.

Małgorzata Seck, VP of programming at Canal+ Polska, said: “Participation in international co-productions is a great opportunity for us to cooperate with the greatest talents from around the world and take yet another step in developing the Canal+ Polska programming offer.

“The Scar project, starting from the plot, through an intriguing mix of southern and eastern climates is an unusual and far from stereotypical look at Spain.”

César Benítez, president of Plano a Plano and producer on Scar, added: “Having the collaboration of Canal+ Poland in this project means taking a step forward in international co-productions and consolidating the business path that we are committed to at Plano a Plano with our international expansion project.

“In this production we have been able to organically put together a story, but also a business model capable of involving territories as different as Spain, Poland and the Adriatic region. Having the participation of the Asacha Media Group team has been crucial for this project to be a positive experience for all parties.”

Canal+ Poland deal was assisted by Akkari Enterprises Ltd (AEL), content distribution company founded by former Warner Bros. exec Rita Akkari.
