Amazon’s SVOD Prime Video has handed a two-season order to adult animated musical comedy series Hazbin Hotel.

Created by Vivienne Medrano, the series is produced by by A24 and Fox Entertainment’s animation studio Bento Box Entertainment.

Hazbin Hotel is based on Medrano’s animated pilot released on YouTube in 2019, which gained more than 89 million views online. The eight-episode first season is set to premiere January 2024 exclusively on Prime Video.

The series follows Charlie, the princess of Hell, as she pursues her seemingly impossible goal of rehabilitating demons to peacefully reduce overpopulation in her kingdom.

After a yearly extermination imposed by angels, she opens a hotel in the hopes that patrons will be “checking out” into Heaven. While most of Hell mocks her goal, her devoted partner Vaggie, and their first test subject, adult film-star Angel Dust, stick by her side. When a powerful entity known as the Radio Demon reaches out to assist Charlie in her endeavors, her crazy dream is given a chance to become a reality.

Medrano serves as executive producer and directed all episodes. Joel Kuwahara and Dana Tafoya-Cameron, and Scott Greenberg also serve as executive producers via A24.

Bento Box was founded in 2009, before being acquired by Fox Entertainment in 2019. It is behind shows such as Bob’s Burgers and Krapopolis for Fox, as well as the upcoming Grimsburg. It also produces third-party programming, including Central Park for Apple TV+ and Koala Man at Hulu.

Co-founder and CEO Scott Greenberg exited the company in April, with COO Brett Coker stepping into the lead role to replace him.
