UK factual outfit Docsville Studios has promoted Sophie Daniel to the newly created role of managing director.

Taking on her new role with immediate effect, the London-based producer will be responsible for growing the company’s global slate of feature documentaries.

Daniel has worked at Docsville Studios for two years, with recent producer credits including Kevin Macdonald’s Last Song From Kabul. The film, which launched at Telluride last month, tells the story of girls in Afghanistan whose musical aspirations are threatened by the Taliban takeover, and will debut on Paramount+ this autumn.

She is also producer on Docsville Studios’ upcoming documentary about the life of Reverend Jesse Jackson, which is being made in partnership with Expanded Media.

Other credits include Sisters Interrupted, the documentary about two sisters who have epilepsy. The series, from Captum Productions in association with Docsville Studios, was picked up for global distribution by Fremantle last week.

Docsville Studios was created following the launch of filmmaker Lawrence Elman and former BBC factual commissioner Nick Fraser’s factual streamer Docsville (fka Yaddo) in 2016 . The streamer side of the operation was acquired by Hong Kong-based distribution and multi-channel operator Lightning International in 2021.

Its founders have worked on titles including One Day In September, Man On Wire, Searching For Sugarman, Project Nim and Notes On Blindness.

Elman, Docsville CEO, said: “We have had a huge amount of interest in our ideas recently and we are delighted to have Sophie on board to help fuel our growth. Sophie is dynamic and extremely talented, a fantastic communicator with a strong production background. She has originated, developed and produced a wealth of programme ideas, with much domestic and international success. She is a great asset to our team and we are lucky to have her head the team.”
