Netflix expands factual sports slate with NASCAR docuseries

Netflix has ordered a new sports docuseries that goes behind the scenes to meet the drivers and teams of the NASCAR Cup’s upcoming series playoffs and championship.

The 5 x 45-minute series will explore the physical and mental challenges of competing for a championship at the world’s highest level of stock car racing.

Produced by Words + Pictures and NASCAR Studios, filming has already begun on the series, which will debut next year, as drivers fight to secure their spot in the NASCAR playoffs, which begin 3 September at Darlington Raceway.

Connor Schell and Libby Geist are exec producing, alongside Aaron Cohen of Words + Pictures; Ben Kennedy, Tim Clark, Matt Summers, Tally Hair of NASCAR Studios; and NASCAR hall of famer Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jackie Decker and Tim Mullen will serve as showrunners.

The series joins Netflix’s lineup of sports programming, including recent releases like Formula 1: Drive To Survive, Full Swing, Break Point, Untold, Quarterback and Tour de France: Unchained.
