Netflix adapts manga ‘Pluto’ as animated series

Netflix has ordered an animated series based on the manga Pluto, set to debut later this year.

The original manga of the same name is is based on Osamu Tezuka’s 1964 Astro Boy story arc The Greatest Robot On Earth.

The adaptation will be produced by Genco, with animation production by M2Studio, and is created by Naoki Urasawa and Takashi Nagasaki and supervised by Macoto Tezka, Tezuka’s son, with the cooperation of Tezuka Productions.

The suspense drama is set in a neo-futuristic world where humans and high-functioning robots live in complete harmony. The original manga has won several awards, including the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize.

“I applaud the courage of everyone that has taken on the challenge of making an anime based on Pluto. I am excited about the birth of this new series to win over people’s hearts. I hope that now more than ever, Osamu Tezuka’s message reaches the world,” said Urasawa.

The Japanese voice cast includes Shinshu Fuji, Yoko Hikasa and Minori Suzuki.
