Amazon Studios plans ‘Bosch’ expansion with two spin-offs in development
Amazon Studios is planning to expand its crime drama franchise Bosch, with two new spin-off series in development.
One of the shows will follow Detective Jerry Edgar, played by Jamie Hector in Bosch and its follow-up Bosch: Legacy. Edgar is the former partner of the series lead character, cop turned private investigator Harry Bosch, and this planned spin-off will follow him on a high-stakes undercover assignment for the FBI.
Henrik Bastin’s Fabel Entertainment is producing the show, with Michael Connelly, who wrote the original novels that the Bosch franchise is based upon, attached to executive produce, alongside Larry Andries, Bastin and Melissa Aouate.
Bastin founded the company in 2021, following his exit from Red Arrow Studios-backed Fabrik Entertainment, where he worked on the seventh and final season of Bosch. Fremantle acquired a 25% stake in Fabel Entertainment, which is also behind Bosch: Legacy, last year.
The second project in development is focused on Detective Renee Ballard, a character from Connelly’s books who has not yet appeared in either of the existing shows. Ballard was mentored by Bosch and is tasked with running the LAPD’s new cold-case division.
This series is also being produced by Fabel Entertainment, and exec produced by Connelly, Michael Alaimo, Kendall Sherwood, Bastin and Aouate. Jasmine Russ will serve as co-exec producer on both planned spin-offs.
The original series Bosch ran on Amazon SVOD Prime Video for seven seasons from 2014 to 2021, following the story of LAPD detective Harry Bosch. A spin-off series, Bosch: Legacy launched on its AVOD service Freevee last year, with Bosch now working as a private investigator. A second season is expected to debut later this year.
News of the planned Bosch shows comes in the same week that Showtime announced plans to expand two of its own scripted franchises, with four spin-offs in development around high finance drama Billions and both a prequel and a sequel in the works for serial killer drama Dexter.
