Netflix clamps down on proxy access

Netflix is clamping down on VPN users, claiming that in the coming weeks people using proxies and unblockers will only be able to access the service in the country they are in.

In a post on the Netflix blog, the company’s vice president of content delivery architecture, David Fullagar, said that Netflix is working to try and stop subscribers from using virtual private networks to access titles only available in different territories.

“This technology continues to evolve and we are evolving with it,” said Fullagar. “We look forward to offering all of our content everywhere and to consumers being able to enjoy all of Netflix without using a proxy. That’s the goal we will keep pushing towards.”

Netflix, which launched in 130 new countries last week and is now available in a total of 190 countries, said it is making progress in licensing content across the world but still has “a ways to go” before it can offer people the same films and TV series everywhere.

“Over time, we anticipate being able to do so. For now, given the historic practice of licensing content by geographic territories, the TV shows and movies we offer differ, to varying degrees, by territory. In the meantime, we will continue to respect and enforce content licensing by geographic location,” said Fullagar.
