Eccho’s Cherry Season blossoms in Asia
BCM: Turkish comedy drama Cherry Season has been picked up by several key buyers in Asia.
The series, which is produced by Surec Film and goes out on the Fox TV channel in Turkey, has been bought by Malaysian pay TV platform Astro, Vietnamese pubcaster VTV and commercial channel ARY in Pakistan.
The finished version and format are distributed by Eccho Rights, which struck the deals. Gary Pudney, Eccho’s head of Asia Pacific, told TBI about the sales from Busan, where the distributor is attending the ongoing Busan Content Market. He added that a further three Asian sales of Cherry Season are in the offing.
Turkish drama is popular internationally, but is often focused towards the male-skewed action and thriller genres, and on epic period pieces. Cherry Season differs in that it is a romantic comedy drama.
“A lot of Turkish drama is male-skewed but there is an increasing realisation of the importance of female viewers, which is why we have something like Cherry Season,” Hong Kong-based Pudney said. “This is not a rom-com, but does have some of those elements.”
In Turkey the series debuted on Fox last year with a 32% share and 6 million viewers. Season one runs to 112x45mins and season two 88x45mins.
