NBCU launches UK-based unscripted unit
NBCUniversal International Television is launching an unscripted development division.
Senior VP of factual and entertainment, David Mortimer (pictured), will oversee the new division.
The news follows NBCU hiring Jack Burgess in August, as first reported by TBI. That move reunited him with Mortimer, who in April exited UK prodco Fever – the company he launched in 2006 with the late Richard Hopkins – to join NBCUI.
Mortimer said: “We are determined to be the home of the next big international format hit, and see the UK as the engine that drives our international television business. I believe that our unique approach to self-funded development will broker a more collaborative relationship with the broadcasters when piloting new ideas.”
NBC said the unit will be tasked with creating “the next big, international hit format”. It will be split into two units, one focused on shiny floor entertainment shows, and the other on returnable high-end factual entertainment formats.
The company said it is hiring staff for the new division at the moment.
