First deal for NBCU’s Spartan Race format

Formats-logo-460_2Discovery’s Danish net Kanal 5 has become the first international buyer of Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge.

It will take a 7x60mins version of the format, which is based on the Spartan Race adventure sport brand.

The TV show has teams of friends and families led by athlete athletes who shepherd them across a demanding Spartan obstacle course. Thirty-six teams will compete in all for the cash prize.

In the US the show launched on NBC, performing well for the US broadcast net. In Denmark it will be produced by Nordisk Film and go out next spring.

“We are incredibly proud and excited that we succeeded to land one of America’s most hardcore TV shows for Denmark,” said Anne Garlichs, head of local programming, Discovery Networks Denmark said.

“On Kanal 5, we have a clear ambition to have the best TV programmes in action-packed entertainment, factual and crime. With a combination of physical strength, teamwork and obstacles, the show is a perfect fit for Kanal 5’s brand and DNA.”

NBCUniversal International Formats launched the show internationally at MIPTV and said it is in advanced talks with two other major European territories.

Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge combines the scale of an epic sporting spectacle with entertaining and inspirational reality story-telling,” said  Yvonne Pilkington, senior VP, format sales & production for NBCUniversal International Formats said.

“It is a truly gripping format which has not only attracted a substantial US audience but has garnered interest from buyers across the globe.”
