Prime Video extends NFL push with UK’s Box To Box, orders Derek Haas drama
Amazon’s Prime Video is pushing further into sports with a docuseries from the UK’s Box To Box Films and expanding its drama offer with a new show starring The Boys’ Jason Ackles.
The untitled sports drama will track life in the National Hockey League (NHL) in North America, following the NHL’s biggest teams and players as they attempt to win the Stanley Cup.
The series is the fourth Prime Video show to be produced with NHL Productions and comes after the streamer picked up rights to stream NHL games in Canada with its Prime Monday Night Hockey show.
“We want to stay true to the world of ice hockey with the series. The sport is as beautiful, skillful and graceful, as it is brutal, pressurized and powerful; and we aim to balance the energetic and fast-paced action leading up to the Stanley Cup Final, with the quiet and raw drama taking place off the ice,” said Paul Martin, co-founder of Box To Box Films and executive producer.
The series is executive produced by Martin and James Gay-Rees of Box To Box Films, alongside Steve Mayer and Ross Bernard for NHL Productions, and Daniel Amigone. It will become available on Prime Video globally.
The Amazon-owned streamer has also ordered Countdown from Derek Haas (FBI: International), with Ackles (The Boys, Supernatural) attached to star.
The 13-episode series was developed for Ackles, who has struck an exclusive overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios, and follows a suspicious murder in broad daylight that leads to an LAPD officer played by Ackles being recruited to join a secret task force to investigate.
Haas created the series and serves as executive producer and showrunner, with Amazon MGM Studios producing.
“We are incredibly excited to be back in business with Derek Haas. He has an undeniable ability to enthrall audiences with thrilling storytelling and heart. We cannot wait for Prime Video’s global customers to experience this dynamic series, led by our very talented star, Jensen Ackles,” said Vernon Sanders, head of television, Amazon MGM Studios.
