Amazon streamer Prime Video has greenlit a reboot of American Gladiators, the US reality competition series that originally ran from 1989 and 1996.

This reboot is being produced by MGM Alternative and Amazon MGM Studios, in association with Flor-Jon Films, and follows a previous revival by NBC in 2008.

The original format was adapted in several countries during the 1990s, including the UK, Japan and South Africa, with recent reboots in the UK and Australia.

American Gladiators pits trained athletes against hopeful contenders in a varirty of challenges that test their speed, strength and agility.

“Gladiators is an enduring, physical challenge format that continues to engage families around the world,” said Lauren Anderson, who was recently promoted to head of brand and content innovation at Amazon MGM Studios.

“We look forward to delighting our global Prime Video customers with both reimagined and nostalgic elements that celebrate the best of the original series.”
