Canada’s CBC unveils hip hop & menopause dramas, acquires ITVX’s ‘The Dry’
CBC in Canada has unveiled a raft of new shows for its 2024-25 slate, including a drama about an Indigenous hip hop duo, a scripted series exploring the menopause and ITVX’s The Dry.
Snotty Nose Rez Kids (8 x 30 minutes) has been created by Quinton Nyce and Darren Metz, and is based on the duo as they move from their remote Haisla Nation to the big city of Vancouver to chase their hip hop dreams.
Vance Banzo and Matt Kippen are also creators, with Jennifer Podemski attached as showrunner. Snotty Nose Productions, Grand Scheme and Reality Distortion Field produce in association with Redcloud Studios.
Sphere Media’s Small Achievable Goals, which follows Jan (Jennifer Whalen) and Kris (Meredith MacNeill) who learn they are menopausal while being forced to work together to produce a podcast.
Whalen and MacNeill created the show, with exec producers including Jennifer Kawaja, Bruno Dube and Elise Cousineau.
Other shows on the comedy front include Red Marrow Media and Northwood Entertainment’s North Of North, which follows a young Inuk mother who wants to build a new future for herself, while returners range from Son Of A Critch S4 and You’re My Hero S2.
International acquisitions include dramedy The Dry, lifestyle series Big Zuu’s 12 Meals in 12 Hours and two-part documentary The Secrets Of Prince Andrew, which reflects on the aftermath of his disastrous BBC Newsnight interview in November 2019.
CBC’s new drama & docs slate
The drama slate includes Hawco Productions’ 10 x 60-minute police procedural Saint-Pierre, which has been created by Allan Hawco, Robina Lord-Stafford and Perry Chafe. Fifth Season is also attached and is handling distribution.
Time travel drama Plan B, produced by KOTV and sold by Red Arrow Studios International, is also back for a second season, along with Allegiance S2, Heartland S18, Murdoch Mysteries S18, Skymed S3 and Wild Cards S2, which is being produced in association with The CW.
The factual slate includes culinary show Locals Welcome from Artifactual Media, which produced Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown, as well as returners Bollywed S3, Canada’s Ultimate Journey S3, Dragon’s Den S19, Family Feud S6, The Great Canadian Baking Show S8, Still Standing S10 and Stuff The British Stole S2.
Docs include Paid In Full from Supercollider, Idris Elba’s Green Door Pictures and Pink Towel in association with Catalyst, which explores the journey of Black artists in the music industry from its inception to the digital streaming age.
There’s also The Knowing, which follows journalist Tanya Talaga and her family’s eight-decade long search for family matriarch Annie Carpenter, alongside Canada’s A Drag S4 and The Passionate Eye.
