PBS’s Nova strand in the US is onboard a new documentary from UK factual indie Blink Films that explores recent revelations about the giant stone heads of Easter Island.

Easter Island Origins (1 x 60 minutes) is a coproduction with France Télévisions, with distributor PBS International securing additional coproduction funding from NHK in Japan, SBS in Australia and WELT in Germany.

The show debuts on Nova on 7 February and explores new research that challenges what Western archaeologists thought they knew about the Easter Island statues and the lives of those who created them.

The special features interviews with archaeologists, architects, geneticists and other experts who challenge existing theories about the creation and the purpose of the Moai, their builders’ heritage and the origin of their statue construction skills.

Easter Island Origins is written and directed by Mike Ibeji and produced by Leonore Raab. Line producer is Renate Brown, and the executive producers for Blink are Tom Adams and Dan Chambers. Julia Cort and Chris Schmidt are executive producers for NOVA.
