Mexican broadcast group TV Azteca has licensed BBC Studios entertainment format The 1% Club, bringing the show it its ninth market overall.

The deal marks the first commission in Latin America for the format, which was originally created by Magnum Media for UK broadcaster ITV.

The 52 x 60-minute Mexican version will be aired on TV Azteca-owned and operated channels, with the format also recently having being acquired by Amazon for Prime Video in the US & Canada. It has also launched internationally in the Netherlands, Australia, Germany, France, Israel, Spain and Turkey.

The 1% Club tests the nation’s intelligence, based on a scientific survey. The entertainment format is not about what you learned at school or your ability to memorise facts. It’s a chance to test how your brain works through a series of questions that often lead to entertaining answers.

André Renaud, SVP of global format sales qt BBC Studios, said: “The burgeoning and proven success of The 1% Club is testament to the format’s versatility and mass appeal. We can’t wait to work with TV Azteca to bring the show to Mexican audiences and see which of them has what it takes to make it into the 1% Club.”
