Channel 4 acquires Welsh-lanaguage Wildflame doc ‘Sex, Me & Disability’
UK broadcaster Channel 4 has acquired Wildflame Productions’ Welsh-language documentary Sex, Me And Disability.
Originally commissioned for Welsh broadcaster S4C’s Drych/Mirror strand under the title Fi, Rhyw ac Anabled, the 60-minute factual title will broadcast (with subtitles) on C4 this winter.
The doc follows Rhys Bowler who has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) as he breaks the taboo of sex and disability. DMD has a debilitating, life-limiting, muscle wasting condition which has left Bowler with the need for assisted ventilation and use of a wheelchair.
In Sex, Me And Disability, he shares his complex journey to find partners online and his new long-distance relationship whilst juggling the many challenges of having DMD. Joined by a cast of other people with disabilities, including his partner Sam, he tackles the questions that people are often too scared to ask.
Wildflame Productions also behind Strictly Amy: Crohn’s & Me, Amy Dowden, Dare To Dance and One Man And His Island for BBC One; Yellowstone Supervolcano: American Doomsday for Discovery+; and Secrets Of The Celtic Grave for Smithsonian Channel and S4C/Discovery.
“The film gives a totally different insight into sex and disability. From the first moment, Rhys, and our producer Jacqueline Lee, wanted to take a no-holds barred approach to talking about the subject. Jacqueline captured Rhys’s openness and raw honesty in an incredible way which has truly resonated with the audience,” said Paul Islwyn Thomas, CEO of Wildflame Productions.
