ABC in the US is to bring its hit medical drama series The Good Doctor to an end with its upcoming seventh season, the broadcaster has announced.

The series, produced by Sony Pictures Television and ABC Signature, will return to screen on 20 February for what will be its final season.

The Good Doctor, which launched in 2017 and is based on a Korean show of the same name, stars and is executive produced by Freddie Highmore, who plays Shaun Murphy, an autistic young surgeon working at a prestigious hospital.

The show follows a slew of other recently cancelled scripted titles on ABC, with Station 19, Young Sheldon, Seal Team and S.W.A.T also coming to an end with their next seasons.

Hopes for a franchise continuation were dashed when ABC ultimately passed on proposed spinoff The Good Lawyer, which was set up via a backdoor pilot episode last season.

The Good Doctor has been a once in a lifetime opportunity, but it’s time to say goodbye,” said the show’s co-showrunners David Shore and Liz Friedman, and executive producer Erin Gunn.

“We are incredibly proud of the work we’ve done and the message we’ve been privileged to be a part of. We look forward to giving our fantastic fans, the truly extraordinary Freddie Highmore, the rest of our talented actors (and friends), and the best crew in the business the series ending that you all deserve.”
