Amazon streamer Prime Video has given the greenlight to an eight-part series inspired by the 1999 movie Cruel Intentions, and renewed sports docuseries The Test for a third season.

Sony Pictures Television, Amazon MGM Studios, and Original Film are producing the Cruel Intentions series, which will be helmed by series writers and exec producers Sara Goodman and Phoebe Fisher. Original Film is the banner of Neal H. Moritz who produced the original movie.

The series was originally set at Amazon Freevee (then called IMDb TV) in 2021, but in April of this year it was reported that the show could be picked up by Prime Video, as it now has been.

In this new adaptation, Cruel Intentions takes place at an elite Washington, DC, college, where two ruthless step-siblings will do anything to stay on top of the cutthroat social hierarchy. After a brutal hazing incident threatens the entire Panhellenic system at their school, they’ll do whatever is necessary to preserve their power and reputation, even if that means seducing the daughter of the vice president of the United States.

The cast includes Sarah Catherine Hook, Zac Burgess, Savannah Lee Smith, Sara Silva, Khobe Clarke, John Harlan Kim, Brooke Lena Johnson, and Sean Patrick Thomas.

“From the ’90s cult-classic film to the 18th-century novel from which it was adapted, Cruel Intentions has captivated audiences with a story that transcends time,” said Lauren Anderson, head of AVOD originals, unscripted, and targeted programming, Amazon MGM Studios.

In related news, Prime Video has also extended Australian cricket docuseries The Test for a third season.

Produced by Amazon MGM Studios, Cricket Australia, and Whooshka Media, season three will feature never-before-seen footage of the most explosive moments of the 2023 Ashes series, as well as the 2023 ICC World Test Championship Final, which the Australian team won.

“The 2023 Ashes were the most closely contested and memorable of recent times, and I am delighted to be able to relive them along with our customers in Australia and around the world,” said Hushidar Kharas, head of Prime Video Australia and New Zealand.
