‘Succession’ and ‘Chernobyl’ named best shows at Edinburgh TV Awards

HBO series Succession won the accolade for best international drama at this year’s annual UK-based Edinburgh TV Awards.

Show creator Jesse Armstrong accepted the plaudit for the series about the dysfunctional owners of a global media empire, which has been renewed for a third season.

Jane Featherstone’s London-based indie Sister Pictures took home two awards after being named production company of the year, while its historical miniseries Chernobyl, which explores the 1980s nuclear disaster in Ukraine, and was made for HBO and Sky, was awarded the title of best drama.

Waad Al-Kateab’s For Sama, which explores the Syrian civil war, won the best documentary award, while comedian Romesh Ranganathan accepted the channel of the year award for BBC Two and All4 was named best on-demand sevice.

Meanwhile, Mae Whitman’s Feel Good, for Channel 4 and Netflix, took the title of best comedy series and BBC Three’s The Rap Game UK was the best entertainment series.

As previously announced, actor David Harewood took home the outstanding achievement award, while a new one-off award – Creativity in Crisis – for stand-out programming showcasing creative brilliance during the difficult conditions seen in 2020, went to Label1 for its BBC Two show Hospital: Fighting Covid-19.
