Discovery’s Shark Week goes VR

Discovery Communications will embark on its annual Shark Week in late June with a virtual reality element included for the first time.

The week-long extravaganza of shark-themed programming kicks off on June 26 and alongside a raft of programming about the aquatic predators there will be a dedicated VR experience, accessible via the DiscoveryVR app.

The VR experience will build on the new programming shown through Shark Week, giving shark enthusiasts the same perspective as several of the filmmakers behind the shows.

The VR and 360-video content will also be available on Facebook and YouTube. An augmented reality component will also allow users to learn more about sharks and unlock games and experiences.

New linear programming for Shark Week includes Deadliest Shark, about oceanic white tip sharks, and Jaws of the Deep, a search for the world’s largest great white.

Other shows include Sharks vs. Dolphins: Face Off, examining the relationship between the two species, clips show Sharksanity, and Eli Roth-fronted Sharktacular, a pre-Shark Week countdown show.

There will also be Air Jaws: Night Stalker (below) following shark photographer Chris Fallows as he embarks on his latest journey to find out more about how great whites hunt.
