Netflix orders first anime original

SVOD network Netflix has scored a “groundbreaking deal” to launch an original anime original around the world for the first time.

The streamer is working with prodco Production I.G. (Attack on Titan, Psycho-Pass) on Perfect Bones, which will debut in 190 territories simultaneously on an unspecified date.

The 12-episode animated series, from director Kazuto Nakazawa, is set in a future in which scientists try to create a ‘perfect human’ in order to keep peace in the universe.

“We are incredibly excited to work with Production I.G, who have worked on hit series such as Attack on Titan and Psycho-Pass, in bringing one of the most daring new Anime titles produced today to all Netflix members and anime fans around the world,” said Erik Barmack, VP, international originals.

The development is another milestone for Netflix, which launched in 130 new territories earlier this year. The company revolutionised viewing habits by launching its original series in their entirety, creating the binge-viewing phenomena, and has since been the first to create streaming originals in a variety of different markets and genres.

“Among all the TV series and films Netflix offers, the titles I personally find the most amazing are Netflix originals,” said Mitsuhisa Ishikawa, president and CEO of Production I.G.

“Production I.G is eager to present another impactful title brought through our creators’ passion and imagination.

The news comes a day after Netflix revealed its first German-produced and -shot original, Dark.
