Brazilian original drama for Netflix

NetflixBuilding4Netflix has ordered its first Brazilian-created original drama, which will be titled 3%.

The series will debut exclusively on the subscription streaming service around the world in 2016, with filming beginning early next year.

Oscar-nominated director Cesar Charlone is attached to the drama, which will star João Miguel (Estômago) and Bianca Comparato (Avenida Brasil), will be shot in 4K and comes from Brazilian produce Boutique Filmes.

3% is billed as a “dramatic thriller that brings viewers into a world divided into progress and devastation” involving a “once-in-a-lifetime chance to pass to the ‘better side’… through a cruel – and not always fair – process where only three per cent of the candidates succeed”.

“Ultimately, the series questions the dynamics of society that imposes constant selection processes we all have to go through, whether we like it or not”,” said Charlone.

“Netflix’s willingness to invest in Brazilian content, local talent and creative storytelling is key for our growth as a industry,” said Tiago Mello, 3%’s executive producer. “The story was originally created a few years ago and now I am thrilled that it will turn into a completely new original Netflix series”.

“We look forward to working with such an acclaimed team for our first Netflix Original production entirely shot in Brazil,” said Erik Barmack,  VP, independent and local content at Netflix. “We are confident that this fascinating premise will be widely enjoyed by our members internationally.”

Netflix currently has French original Marseille, which comes from Federation Entertainment, and Left Bank Pictures-produced UK royal family drama The Crown on its international production slate. There have also been rumours it will create an original series in Germany.
