Shomi SVOD going wide

Shomi-app-Tablet-viewCanadian SVOD service Shomi is being made available over the top, to all Canadian consumers, this summer.

It was previously only available to customers taking an internet package from Rogers or Shaw, the MSOs that jointly created and run the service.

From the summer it will be available online and via connected devices and services including Xbox and Chromecast.

Shomi launched last November in what it is now calling beta mode, and current customer numbers are not known. The service exists in a fiercely competitive SVOD environment in Canada, with the likes of CraveTV and Netflix also in the market.

“The beta has been a huge success and we’re excited to now bring it to all Canadians. We’ve taken the time to work out the kinks so members can enjoy a great user interface and viewing experience,” said David Asch, senior VP and general manager, Shomi.

He added: “We know more Canadians want the bleary-eyed but oh-so-satisfying experience of an epic entertainment binge, and that they want the freedom to choose how they access the service.”
